Destination Inspiration

Best Outdoor Destination Wedding Venues in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a whole country rather than a resort strip, and that shows up in the outdoor venues more than anywhere else. The north coast at Puerto Plata has mountains running down to the Atlantic. Miches on the northeast is backed by green hills and is barely developed. La Romana in the south is calm, shallow water and golf. Cap Cana is gated, manicured, and quiet.

So choosing an outdoor venue here is partly choosing a landscape, which isn’t true on most Caribbean islands. The scale runs wide too: one lawn is licensed for 2,000 guests, two beaches hold 800 each, and a pier on the south coast seats 24.

Below are seven resorts across five areas, with what each setting gives you. Our Certified Destination Wedding Specialists can confirm which venues are held privately for your destination wedding and which are shared.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada

Best Outdoor Destination Wedding Venues at Top Dominican Republic Resorts

Seven resorts across Cap Cana, Puerto Plata, Miches, La Romana, and Punta Cana, with outdoor capacity from 24 guests to 2,000.

1. Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana beach wedding

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana has the largest outdoor wedding venue in the country. The Larimar Lawn is licensed for 2,000 guests, and the beach takes another 800.

A lawn at that scale is a different proposition from a beach. You get level ground, so chairs stand straight and a dance floor works, with the ocean still in view rather than underfoot. The Rooftop Terrace adds 200 above, and the Santo Domingo Terrace another 100. Cap Cana itself is a gated development, which keeps the beaches noticeably quieter than the Bavaro strip to the north.

2. Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada is the strongest outdoor option on the north coast, with two separate beach venues at 400 and 250 guests, a Beach Gazebo for 250, and a Garden Venue for 100.

Puerto Plata is the Dominican Republic’s oldest resort area and still its most scenic, with the Cordillera Septentrional rising behind the coastline and Mount Isabel de Torres above the town. Having four outdoor venues at one property there, including a 250-guest gazebo, makes this the practical choice for a large wedding that wants the north coast rather than the east.

3. Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa

Secrets Cap Cana Juanillo Beach wedding venue

Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa is adults-only and has the best spread of outdoor wedding settings in Cap Cana: Juanillo Beach for 350, the Garden Terrace for 200, Preferred Beach for 200, a Pool Terrace for 100 and a Gazebo for 80.

Juanillo is one of the genuinely beautiful beaches on this coast, wide and calm with a long shallow shelf. Five outdoor venues at different sizes mean a destination wedding weekend can give the welcome party, the ceremony and the reception their own settings without anyone leaving the grounds.

4. Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa

Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort and Spa

Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa sits in Miches, where the beach takes 350 and the pool terrace 200.

Miches is the reason to look at it. This stretch of the northeast coast was undeveloped until recently, so the backdrop is green hills rather than hotel blocks, and the beach is quiet in a way the Punta Cana strip hasn’t been for twenty years. For couples who want the Dominican Republic without the resort-corridor feel, this is where to start.

5. Dreams Dominicus La Romana Resort & Spa

Dreams Dominicus La Romana Resort & Spa has the most varied outdoor collection on the south coast: the Main Plaza for 300, the beach for 250, a Beach Gazebo for 200, a pier for 120 and a poolside venue for 100.

A plaza is unusual among Caribbean wedding venues and genuinely useful, since it gives you a hard, level surface with architecture around it rather than open sand. The pier puts the ceremony out over the water. La Romana’s shallow, protected coastline also means calmer water than the Atlantic-facing north, which matters if guests are swimming.

6. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is the adults-only half of the Cap Cana Hyatt complex, with a beach for 800, the Santo Domingo Terrace for 200, a Rooftop Terrace for 100 and the Larimar Lawn for 80.

An 800-guest beach at an adults-only resort is rare anywhere in the Caribbean. The practical advantage of this pairing is that a wedding party can split by preference, with couples and friends here and families with children next door at the Ziva side, while sharing the same stretch of sand.

7. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Punta Cana Harmonica Beach wedding venue

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana has the deepest outdoor collection on the main Punta Cana coast. Piano Beach takes 350 for a ceremony and 300 for a reception, the Element Terrace holds 300, and the Ipanema Garden another 200.

Three outdoor venues at 200 or more on one property is rare, and the range lets a destination wedding weekend give the welcome party, the ceremony and the reception their own settings. Bavaro is the busiest and best-connected stretch of coastline in the country, which for a large guest list arriving on many different flights, is a practical advantage the quieter areas can’t match. The resort also carries the country’s largest ballroom if the weather turns.

More Information for Planning Your Outdoor Destination Wedding in the Dominican Republic

Outdoor weddings are the default here, with a seasonal caveat. Here’s what our Certified Destination Wedding Specialists raise.

Outdoor Destination Wedding Venues Appeal

Landscape variety is what this country offers that single-island destinations can’t. Mountains behind the beach in Puerto Plata, green hills in Miches, calm shallow water in La Romana, manicured seclusion in Cap Cana. The same budget buys four genuinely different-looking destination weddings depending on where you point it.

Scale is the second advantage. A 2,000-guest lawn and two 800-guest beaches mean a very large wedding doesn’t have to move indoors to fit, which on most Caribbean islands it would. Even the mid-sized venues here run generous, with several beaches between 250 and 400.

The caveat is season. Hurricane season runs June through November and heavy afternoon rain is common in those months, so an outdoor wedding then needs a covered backup confirmed in writing, including which space and by what hour the call gets made. Worth knowing too that beaches in the Dominican Republic are public, so ask how the resort screens and stages the ceremony area.

Dominican Republic Destination Wedding Cost

The average couple marrying in the Dominican Republic spends around $8,959 all in, with most landing between $7,000 and $11,000. That covers the wedding package, accommodations, airfare, and add-ons. Rooms average roughly $350 per person per night across a typical four-night stay, with airfare of $300 to $700 per person. Couples marrying here average 38 guests.

These averages reflect real spend data from couples who booked their destination wedding with our Certified Destination Wedding Specialists.

Outdoor wedding venues are usually the more economical choice, since they rarely carry the rental fee a ballroom does. What does add up is what the open air requires: lighting once the sun goes, a sound system that works without walls, shade for a daytime ceremony, and a tent on standby in the wet season.

Dominican Republic Destination Wedding Packages

Resorts here offer complimentary and deposit-only wedding packages with a qualifying room block. Entry tiers run roughly $800 to $3,000 and cover the venue, an officiant, basic decor, a cake, and a toast. Mid-tier packages land between $3,500 and $5,000, and full productions run $5,500 to $14,000 and beyond.

Beach ceremonies are what most base packages are written around, so an outdoor wedding often needs the least customization of any format here. Check whether setup, chairs, and sound for the open air are included or itemized separately, since that gap is where quotes most often diverge.

Dominican Republic Destination Wedding Travel Information

Punta Cana International is the main gateway with the widest choice of direct flights, but it isn’t always the right one. Puerto Plata, La Romana, Samana and Santo Domingo all have airports, and for resorts on those coasts they save hours.

Cap Cana is 20 to 30 minutes from Punta Cana International, Miches is around two hours, and La Romana is within half an hour of its own airport. Tell guests which airport to book before invitations go out rather than after. December through April is the driest and busiest stretch, and the shoulder months either side offer better rates with a manageable weather risk.
