Ishu and Rishma, who married at Moon Palace Cancun with 150 guests, chose Cancun over Europe for a specific practical reason:

“Yes, we always knew we wanted a destination wedding. Ishu loved the beach and Rishma just wanted something different than all the Indian weddings she had been to before. We originally looked at other options in Europe but having good indian food options and planners that had alot of experience with south asian weddings made us land on Cancun. “I wanted to do Italy for a wedding, but that changed a few years ago when my mom suddenly passed away. My mom always said that when I got married she wanted to have a big party for me. Sarah and Nick, who married at TRS Coral with 30 guests, put the guest experience first:

“We loved that our guests could stay in a swim up room, suite, or just basic room! I’ve never had so many people tell me how much they loved a wedding in their lives, plus they got a vacation on top of it all.”

How Our Couples Personalized Their Cancun Ceremony and Reception

A clear split shows up here. Some couples went all in on reception production. Others spent nothing on decor and everything on the venue itself. Both worked.

“We upgraded our package mainly to cover the food and drinks for the full number of guests versus paying per guest. We also got access to the premium locations, a private cocktail hour and reception which made things easier for everyone. For entertainment we added a violinist to the ceremony and dining portion of the reception (absolutely worth it), and there was a surprise firework show at the end of the last song of the night.”

Ivette and Reynald at Dreams Sands Cancun went hard on the party:

“We added a lot of extra add ons. I upgraded the florals, wedding arch, and added a boho aisle runner. The flowers came out so beautiful, the florist did an amazing job executing my vision/colors. We also added a DJ/MC/cold fireworks/light up dance floor and even cryo jets because we wanted our reception to be a huge party. The cryo jets were 100% worth it and the DJ/MC were amazing at what they do, we were on the dance floor the entire time.”

Neely and Steve at Dreams Playa Mujeres skipped the beach entirely and put the money into the ceremony setting:

“We did an over the water ceremony, which was absolutely beautiful. I knew I did not want the beach and the over the water was worth the extra money for me. It was classy and elegant and just the two of us standing together. Florals for me, were something that was worth spending the extra money on; I wanted beautiful, colorful, elegant flowers that weren’t white. We did upgrade the DJ/MC and an extra hour to the reception (although it was cut short that hour because it started to rain). We also chose to have water drums at the reception which was a huge hit and def. worth the money! Everyone loved it!”

Ishu and Rishma at Moon Palace Cancun focused their upgrades on the visual elements:

“We did a lot of upgrades to our wedding and receptions including our flower package at our wedding and the backdrop and table settings at our reception.”

Yasmin and Milad at Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres took the opposite approach to production:

“We really focused on making the ceremony and reception feel personal and reflective of us rather than overly formal. We chose meaningful music for different moments, added small touches that represented our relationship, and created a relaxed, warm atmosphere so it felt genuine and not scripted.”

 

The Most Memorable Moments Our Couples Had at Their Cancun Weddings

Almost none of these were on anyone’s timeline. The best moments were the unplanned ones, and in two cases the weather and the resort next door did the work.

Ishu and Rishma picked the walk back up the aisle:

“We walked back down the aisle together as husband and wife.”

Ivette and Reynald had the most unexpected moment anyone described to us:

“We were thinking of getting fireworks and ultimately decided not to. During the reception while we were all dancing fireworks went off in front of the resort in the ocean and went on for almost 10 minutes. It was the most epic thing ever, we all gathered on the beach and the DJ was playing our favorite songs and we all did a big cheers and danced on the beach together watching the fireworks.”

Neely and Steve turned a rained-out final hour into the best part of the night:

“Jumping into the pool with some of the guest at the end of the reception in the rain!”

Edwige and Andre skipped the first look on purpose:

“We saw each other for the first time when she was walking down the aisle. We opted not to have a first look so that moment was incredibly special and impactful. We couldn’t believe that we made it to that point, and almost immediately after the initial shock, we started cracking up.”

Yasmin and Milad pointed to the family moments rather than any single one:

“The most memorable moments were hearing my husband’s vows, which felt so genuine and emotional, and walking down the aisle with both of my parents, which meant so much to me. Our first dance was really special, along with my sister’s maid of honour speech that I’ll never forget. The father-daughter dance was another moment I’ll always hold onto, and honestly, just being on the dance floor surrounded by all my favourite people made the whole night feel so full of love and joy.”

Sarah and Nick kept it to one image:

“My bride walked down the aisle on a beach. The waves in the background were an incredible touch.”

Our Couples’ Favorite Parts of Their Cancun Trip (Besides the Wedding Itself)

This is the argument for a Cancun wedding in a few lines: the excursions are genuinely good, they’re close, and the days around the wedding are what people remember.

Neely and Steve built a full day around a catamaran the morning after:

“Other than the wedding, my favorite part was getting to see a sea turtle while snorkeling! The day after the wedding, we rented a catamaran with Cancun Sailing to Isle Mujeres, where we docked for two hours. On the way to the island, we snorkeled for approx 30 minutes and saw so many beautiful fish and even a sea turtle! Everyone had a great time on the boat and it was a great way to get everyone together after the wedding to continue the fun. We also did an excursion where we snorkeled, swam in a cave (which was pretty cool), zip-lined and drove ATV’s.”

Ishu and Rishma went inland:

“Our favorite part is the excursion we did with our friends after our wedding. We went ziplining and atving to the cenotes.”

Ivette and Reynald pointed to the mix of people in one place:

“Having all our friends and families from all walks of life together in paradise. We had people from Guatemala, France and different states from the US and it was surreal having everyone together in Mexico for a few days. Hanging out with everyone as a group was so memorable. We had welcome parties Thursday and Friday and the wedding on Saturday so I was able to see everyone all together a few times.”

Edwige and Andre used their own room as the gathering spot:

“Our room had a beautiful rooftop with a pool and lounge area, so we invited all our guests over to catch up over drinks. It was great seeing both families so happy that both of us found a partner who compliments us so well. We all laughed the whole night.”

Sarah and Nick kept it simple and social:

“Bar hoping and going to dinner with our guests, a different group every night.”

Two themes dominate. Get organized early, and then let go of the parts you can’t control.

Sarah and Nick said it in seven words:

“Take a moment to enjoy the moment.”

Ivette and Reynald gave the most tactical advice we received from any couple:

“Be very detailed in your emails to the wedding coordinator of your resort and have a folder for all of your contracts and documents and a folder in your email for all communication with the hotels/DW. I added bullets to all my emails to the wedding coordinator and she would respond to each bullet.”

Edwige and Andre said something similar and added a reminder for the day itself:

“Day of reminder, just breathe. The day will be a blur but you need to find a few seconds throughout the day to just soak in the experience. It’s easier to do that if you do your research, and have a document that tracks EVERYTHING. Even if you despise spreadsheets, finding a template that breaks down your guest list, wedding expenses, vendor info, wedding schedule, etc., is a lifesaver.”

Ishu and Rishma, with the largest guest list of the group, kept it short:

“The biggest advice is to stay super organized and start early, procrastinating can bring so much stress to the planning process.”

Neely and Steve came at it from the other direction:

“Trust the process and do not stress. Leave it to the people who do this everyday. Show up and enjoy your time wherever you choose to go. Destination weddings are a once in a lifetime opportunity (or should be), making the best memories with your favorite people.”

Yasmin and Milad focused on whose day it actually is:

“My biggest piece of advice would be to stay focused on what truly matters to you as a couple and not get caught up in trying to please everyone. Destination weddings come with a lot of opinions and logistics, but at the end of the day, it’s about your experience and the people who are there to celebrate you. Trust your decisions, keep things as simple as possible, and be present throughout the process and the trip itself.”

Where Our Cancun Couples Are Going for Their Anniversary

Italy came up twice. Neely and Steve want to go back and share it together, and Ivette and Reynald picked Lake Como specifically to take a boat down the lake and stay on the water. Ishu and Rishma chose Japan, somewhere they’ve both wanted to see for years. Edwige and Andre picked Rome, so they can visit the Vatican and receive a blessing there.

The other two are going straight back. Sarah and Nick said they’d return to TRS Coral without hesitation, and Yasmin and Milad want the adults-only side of the same property, just the two of them this time.
